One of the biggest attractive in order to bring overseas students is the possibility to work legally in the country during the period of the chosen course.

The student Visa allows the student, after starting the classes, to work 20 hours per week. One of the conditions is not losing classes to work (this is the school responsibility, to control students attendance on behalf of Immigration Department).  So, a student can work up to 20 hours per week as long as don’t miss classes. However, at the end of the course, the Visa is automatically extended for one month and this “vacations” period allows the student to work with no work hour’s limit. It’s a fair compensation for those who want to make some money after completing its goal.

For those arriving at Australia with the working holiday Visa, it’s allowed to work up to 3o hours per week. This type of Visa has duration of one year and can be only given once, not allowing studying more than 3 months during the Visa period either. The good thing is that you can work more hours per week but remember that the Student Visa can be renewed as long as you keep studying and, focusing on money not always is the best option comparing to study.

There are basically three types of work contracts in Australia and all of them use the same salary base, per hour of work. See below:

Part-time Job

These are the opportunities preferred by students as it respects the 20 hours of work per week and don’t interfere on class schedules. Working hours are predefined and limited to four hours per day. It’s perfect for students.

The most common areas who offer part-time jobs are: Hospitality, Office and Construction Cleaner.

Full-time Job

This is the type of work most used globally which requires 40 working hours per week. It’s not easy to be found due to students Visa limitation. Most of people who get full-time job received a Sponsorship letter issues by the company. This letter state that the company needs a specific manpower and that will be responsible for this person while in the country. This kind of request force to a Visa type changes and establish an important commitment with the employer. The challenge is to find a company who really needs specific manpower in order to justify such expensive hiring as this one. This is an unusual profile for students but not impossible to acquire.

Casual

Casual jobs are very interesting as they have no fixed working period and no daily commitment. Companies which decide for this kind of process count with a workers list, which are contacted whenever the company needs some manpower for specific events or activities. There are different work profiles that use this process. One of them is the Catering, a service of companies that work with events.  Sports Arenas, Indy races, graduation parties, concerts and horse racings are some of the events you may be invited to work at. To work as casual you must enroll at an office which works with this kind of service, showing your interest and that expects to be called. A tip is to choose for companies which work in specific areas. This increases a lot during a U2 concert, for example; so you can make money while the concert happens. The number of worked hours depends on the service provided. Try not exceeding the limit of hours during the week.
